Soroptimist Success for Rainey Pupils!

On Thursday 8th November 2018, three Rainey pupils took part in the annual Soroptimist International Public Speaking Competition – Ballymoney and District Local Area Competition. Ellen Henderson (year 12,) Catherine Turkington (year 12,) and Holly Weir (year 12,) all volunteered to take part in the competition this year. The competition is open to girls in year 12 and year 13. The aims of the competition include “encouraging girls to develop the skills to speak effectively and to articulate with clarity” and “to develop self-confidence.”

There were a choice of six topics to choose from and all three Rainey girls chose the thought-provoking topic, “Real wealth is never measured in money or possessions.” Each pupil had to deliver a speech of between four and six minutes in length in front of a panel of esteemed judges and the audience. Even though the three girls chose the same topic, they each had their own unique ideas and anecdotes. All three girls delivered highly engaging and entertaining speeches and left the audience contemplating whether or not we are letting money and materialism take over our lives. The girls put a huge amount of work into writing and then delivering their speeches and they all did brilliantly on the night.
In total, sixteen pupils took part in the local area competition from five different schools. We are absolutely delighted that Holly Weir was placed first overall and will go on to represent Ballymoney and District at the Northern Ireland Final which will be held on Saturday 9th February 2019 in Hillsborough. Also, we are all very happy that Catherine Turkington was awarded second place and Ellen Henderson tied for third place with a pupil from Coleraine Grammar School. It is an amazing achievement for all three girls to take part in the competition and have the courage to speak in front of an audience and of course it is a wonderful bonus that all three Rainey pupils were placed on the night. Congratulations Holly, Catherine and Ellen! Also, congratulations to the girl from Coleraine Grammar who tied for third and delivered a great speech on the topic, “Fake news – is it threatening our integrity?” We also would like to say a huge congratulations to all sixteen girls who took part in the competition and were all so enthusiastic about their chosen topics.

Thank you to Holly, Catherine and Ellen for all of their hard work and dedication in preparing for the competition and for giving up your evenings and lunch times to prepare so diligently. Thank you to their parents for their support and to everyone at Ballymoney Soroptimist for all of their hard work in organising the competition and making everyone feel so welcome. I think it is fair to say that everyone had a really worthwhile, valuable and enjoyable experience. We are incredibly proud of Holly, Catherine and Ellen and their fantastic achievement. We wish Holly the best of luck for the Northern Ireland Final and the whole Rainey community will be cheering for you!
