A mixed squad of U12 and U13 girls were entered into the annual Coleraine High Soccer 7s tournament with 21 other teams. We were defending champions and Mrs Quigley informed me that ‘you’d better win’ – so no pressure there then. Rainey had a comfortable passage through the group stage winning 3 and drawing 1 match for a combined score of 12-0.

We overcame local rivals Magherafelt High 1-0 in the quarter finals thanks to a coolly taken penalty from inspirational Captain Sharagh Murphy. The girls showed great fitness to go straight in against a very good Coleraine High side in the semis. We conceded our first goal of the tournament early on but sustained Rainey pressure eventually told when, with the last kick of the match, an own goal was conceded by Coleraine. The resulting penalty shootout was a tense affair in which Molly Clifford saved every penalty and eventually Rachel McMenemy won the match with an expertly converted spot kick.

Rainey faced an outstanding Park Hall side in the final. The free-scoring opposition had dominated all other teams in the tournament and Rainey were forced to defend valiantly throughout, with Sophie Herron and Zara Glendinning seemingly everywhere! The concentration, organisation and determination shown by the girls was amazing. A 0-0 score line lead to another nerve-wracking penalty shootout where Sharagh and Sophie scored and Molly saved one of the Park Hall pens. Over to Mighty Ellie (May) Montgomery who dispatched her penalty, in style, to give victory and the tournament to Rainey. All eleven girls made great contributions to a brilliant day out and a successful outcome, thoroughly deserving their post-match McDonalds!

So many thanks to Miss Queenie McCoy and Alex ‘Mourinho’ Burns, for the tactics, team-talks, drills and support.
