Our journey started at 5:30 in the morning, where we met at the school, said our goodbyes and began the drive to Dublin.
From there we caught the 11:00 AM flight to Istanbul, where we had to hurry in order to make it to our next flight. The flight to Istanbul was 4 hours and 30 minutes, but this was nothing compared to the flight to Entebbe, clocking in at around 8 and a half hours. Thankfully the wide range of movies and the meal provided helped make it more manageable. We arrived in Uganda around 4 AM, and after a long process of getting through immigration we began our bus journey to the Abaana guesthouse.
We arrived at the abaana guesthouse around 7am in the second day. After a short welcome and talk with auntie Fi we thankfully got to go to sleep til 11 after the long journey.
We stayed round the guesthouse, exploring the grounds and admiring the banana trees. At 3 we set off for Kampala to see our first glimpse of Ugandan life.
The bus ride there was an experience in itself, with what I can only describe as an alternative style of driving to what we are used to at home. Once we arrive in Kampala there was packed streets and busy roads with there so much to take in.
We were set with a challenge to see who could get mangos, tomatoes, bananas and peas for the cheapest price. It was a challenge bartering with the market owners to win the challenge. However we all succeeded in getting it for under 20000 Ugandan shillings (which is only about £4). Mary’s team won with 6500 shilling left over.
After a long day we took our purchases back to the abaana guesthouse, had dinner and were all in bed before 10 as we were completely exhausted.
