Today was very exciting, we finally got to meet the 780 kids that attend Rainey primary school. We arrived to singing from the P6 choir, a message from the principal and we sang our 3 songs including “Rainey’s Call”.
After the welcoming ceremony, the building team split up two sub-groups and divided the workload between. One group mixed sand, water and cement to make the mortar which the other group used in their bricklaying. With the guidance of the lead contractor Mr Tom, we were all working fast in no time at all.
The building team then took a break to be greeted by the local dignitaries from the region. He welcomed us and gave us his assurance that he would personally be looking out for us during our stay.
After hours of shovelling cement and heaving bricks about in the sweltering heat, the building team finished up a successful day of bricklaying, with good progress made on the first walls of the Nursery block.
For those teaching the lessons ranged from teaching the kids the alphabet to the song ‘Old McDonald had a farm’. We played many games with the children (Duck Duck Goose was a big hit), but the thing they enjoyed most was the glitter that we had brought with us, for the intention of crafting animal masks, however they definitely enjoyed wearing it more.
We had two lessons before lunch and one after, we were all sad to leave at the end of today. We loved teaching, seeing how enthusiastic and excited all of the children were to learn. However we are happy to return again tomorrow and be part of the building team.
