Our journey started at 5:00 am, when our team began their long journey from Rainey Endowed to Kampala, Uganda.
After two long flights, we landed in Entebbe at 6:30 am. After only one lost suitcase, we took an hour-and-a-half bus ride to the Abaana Guesthouse, where we were welcomed by the hospitable and kind-hearted staff.
After a long 24 hours, we had a much-needed two-hour power nap before eating breakfast and receiving a briefing for the day ahead. As we embarked on our bus journey to St Julian’s School, the songs soon began – and what we lacked in pitch, we made up for in spirit for what lay ahead.
Around 4:00 pm, we arrived at the school, where we were met by the enthusiastic children, whose bright smiles and cheerful energy made us feel very welcome. We were kindly taken on a guided tour of an impressive school complex and gained valuable insight into the incredible work Abaana is doing. It was inspiring to see the life-changing impact their efforts are having on the education and futures of so many young people.
We were treated to a captivating performance by the talented students, who showcased the incredible musical abilities of the New Life Choir. Their vibrant display not only highlighted their individual talents but also offered a rich and moving insight into the beauty of Ugandan culture, expressed through traditional dances and songs.
As the day came to an end, we were fortunate enough to take away memories that will last a lifetime. It was an inspiring and humbling reminder of the impact that compassion and the opportunities given by Abaana can have on young people.
