An excerpt:
“Mr. Richard McCullagh, Art Master in the School, volunteered for service in the Royal Navy in July, 1940, and within a short time had gained his commission. He was awarded the Medal of St. Olaf, with Oak Leaf, by King Haakon of Norway. The deed which gained him this honour was the rescue of the Norwegian crew of the destroyer Eskdale, numbering about 100 men. The Eskdale was struck by a torpedo when on convoy duty in the English Channel. She was ablaze, and liable to blow up at any moment, and enemy craft were still attacking. Despite the great risks involved, Lieut. McCullagh took his motor launch alongside the Eskdale, and saved the greater part of the crew. They had scarcely drawn away from the destroyer when a terrific explosion blew it to pieces. Lieut. McCullagh is now in command of the 10th M.L. Flotilla. He expects to leave the Navy in March.”
