Ulster GAA’s Annual Cúchulainn Cup Winners
On 16th March, seven Year 11 Rainey Endowed students competed in this year’s U16 – Ulster GAA’s Annual Cúchulainn Cup which was held at Meadowbank Sports Arena. Joining forces with St. Pius’ X College and St. Mary’s Grammar School they represented themselves within hurling and Gaelic football matches throughout the day as the Magherafelt team. The boys had a chance to work with and compete against a range of schools from Magherafelt, Banbridge and Ballymena.
The first part of the day consisted of meeting and greeting all schools and participants, getting organised with free kit and learning the names of each team member. Then the hurling competition began with the Magherafelt team winning all hurling matches and with very little experience their skills and determination grew throughout the day. As the day progressed the boys moved on to Gaelic football in which their skills and team work excelled, the team could see that their goal of becoming the 2016 Cúchulainn Cup Winners was within reach.
The Rainey Endowed boys and other team members played a significant role in reaching this goal, they remained unbeaten in both hurling and Gaelic football throughout the day. More important than winning, the boys took part in a successful cross-community competition and excelled in every task that was set in front of them. They showed great maturity and ensured everyone in the team was included and this was commented by other teachers and all the coaches involved prior to and during this competition.
Well done to Harry Evans, Jack Bresland, Bryn Davies, Bryan Hall, Adam McCrum, Karl Warner and Rory Bradley who have now been chosen to represent their school and community in the All-British Championship which is being held in London in July! This is an amazing opportunity for the boys and we wish them all the best!
