Ulster Hockey’s U16 and U18 teams returned from their final competitive event of their respective seasons following the completion of Hockey Ireland’s U16 and U18 Female Inter Provincial series at the weekend. It proved a successful tournament for Ulster U16s as they became the first Ulster U16 group since 2013 to win the event while the U18s had to be content with a third placed finish.

A finishing position that also resulted two years previously when this age group competed at U16 level. Ulster Hockeys HPM – Stephen Watt – commented “There has been a sound level of investment placed in all of these players throughout the last 11 months as they have built from working at U15 or U17 level through to our U16 and U18 programmes. It is pleasing to see our U16s score four goals in two of their four games at the weekend and the improvement in our match play goalkeeping since June. Both of which were targets within the programme. The fact the group turned the high level of talent we believed existed both within, and indeed beyond this group, into the level of performances required to win is also encouraging, and a good sign. At U18 level we consider the players have progressed well and certainly played at the weekend. Our ability in the attacking circle is what probably hindered further progress which hopefully will come as they move forward. The girls though, as with the U16s, can be content that they showed Ulster Hockey, and Sport NI, the benefits they have derived from the opportunities they have taken to work at and enjoy their hockey and repay the significant support they have had from their parents and Sport NI.”

All four Rainey Endowed girls performed really well for their Ulster teams.

Erin Anderson was the Captain of the successful U16 Team and Ellie Montgomery also played on this team.

Lauren Mulholland was promoted to Captain of the U18 Team after the second match due to the Captain getting injured. Alex Burns also played in defense for the U18 Team.

Joanne Patterson, past Rainey pupil and 1STXI hockey player, was the Ulster Physiotherapist for both teams.

So the Rainey was very well represented and is extremely proud of all the girls! Well done girls!
