Lego League 2019

W5 welcomed 140 pupils from schools across Northern Ireland to the twelfth annual Northern Ireland FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge on Wednesday 4 December.

The FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) is a global science and technology challenge for teams of students, to encourage an interest in real world issues and develop key skills that are crucial for their future careers.

With this year’s theme as ‘City Shaper’, the Rainey Team was challenged to think like scientists and engineers, whilst exploring our built environment.

The Team focused on our own school building exploring the possibility of reusing our old gym into a modern study space. The Team consisting of year 8 pupils, Charlie, Maciej, Evan, Caleb, Connor, Ryan, Fionn, Balin and Ella created virtual models of the proposed new space and presented it to a panel of judges.

As well as that the Team had to test and program an autonomous robot using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® to solve a set of missions in a Robot Game environment and be interviewed as a group on their Team working skills.

This proved again to be an invaluable experience and we thank W5 for hosting another fabulous event.
